Over a million dong for a Canadian stone crab
The price of imported Canadian crab is being pushed up by stores, especially when Vietnamese stone crab is becoming increasingly scarce.
As a specialist in selling Ly Son stone crabs, Mr. Thanh, the owner of a seafood warehouse in Bien Hoa, said that he only imports 20 kg each week but still cannot sell enough. "This type is even more expensive than king crabs because they are becoming increasingly rare. If in the past people could catch crabs weighing up to 400 grams, now most of them weigh just over 100 grams and the purchase price has also increased many times compared to 2 years ago," Mr. Thanh said.

Therefore, he recently imported Canadian stone crabs, which are "giant" in weight, some weighing up to 1.5 kg, as a replacement. The price of Canadian stone crabs is the same as Ly Son stone crabs, but the meat is firmer and fatter. In the near future, Mr. Thanh will proactively increase this source of goods.
The owner of a seafood shop on Nguyen Sy Sach Street, Tan Binh District, is also fond of Canadian stone crabs because customers are ordering more and more, while Vietnamese products cannot meet the demand. He said that each month he sells about a hundred kilograms of stone crabs, imported from Canada or North America. This type is available all year round but is not exploited at many times. This crab has very strong, meaty claws, and the shell can be up to 25 cm wide. Canadian stone crabs have soft but blocky meat, with a rich, sweet taste typical of cold seas. In addition, the large, thin-shelled stone crab legs are easy to remove meat from, and when cooked, the fat is sweet.
The price of each Canadian stone crab is about 1.2 million VND (weighing 1.5 kg). Meanwhile, if it is Vietnamese stone crab, the weight is quite small, each kg has 7-10 crabs and is sold for 800,000 VND per kg.
Canadian stone crabs, also known as Dungeness, originate from Dungeness Harbor (Washington), and live on the cliffs of the Northwest coast. They are a popular seafood in the West and often appear at the annual seafood festival in Washington. These crabs have hard shells and five pairs of long legs. They can bury themselves completely in the sand if threatened. They like to eat clams, other crustaceans, and small fish. This seafood is also in the top 4 of the most delicious crabs in the world.
