(Baonghean) - Former Interpol President Meng Hongwei has been expelled from the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) - China's top political advisory body.

On November 30, Chinese state media reported that former Interpol President Meng Hongwei was expelled from the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) - China's top political advisory body.

Specifically, the CPPCC National Committee unanimously revoked Meng Hongwei's membership, after the committee's chairmen and vice chairmen approved the decision to expel him at a meeting on October 26.

The decision was made after China's National Supervisory Commission announced it was opening an "investigation into suspected violations of the law" on charges of bribery and other economic crimes against the former Interpol President.

In early October, Interpol opened an investigation into Meng Hongwei’s disappearance after he returned to China on September 25. In addition to Interpol, France has also conducted its own investigation and said that Meng Hongwei boarded a plane to China, but the 64-year-old official’s next destination is unknown.

According to Interpol's website, before becoming the head of Interpol in November 2016, Mr. Meng Hongwei held many senior positions in China, including Deputy Minister of Public Security. He has 40 years of experience in crime prevention activities related to drugs, terrorism, etc. Mr. Meng is also the first Chinese person to hold the position of President of Interpol, with his term ending in 2020.
