In mid-December, Ms. Cao and her daughter-in-law went to the Hanoi People's Court to hear the trial of her son Nguyen Quang Minh and his accomplices.Robbery, Theft and Consumption of Property Obtained by Crime.

The 70-year-old woman had a sad face all the time before the trial began. She was in poor health and had difficulty walking, so she had to rely on her daughter-in-law to help her into the courtroom. When she saw Minh, she cried softly, without making a sound.

She didn’t know how many times this was, but she had to shed tears for her youngest son who was over 40 years old. Like many mothers, she wanted her son to have a stable life, get married and have grandchildren to hold. But Minh did not help her wish come true.

Her husband died early, and she raised two children alone. Life was hard, and she had to work hard to earn money, so she somewhat neglected Minh. Before finishing sixth grade, Minh dropped out of school and followed his friends into a life of crime.

She said that the economy was difficult, with two children alone, but still had enough for breakfast and dinner. Minh did not know how to love his mother, and soon got into trouble with the law. At the age of 17 (in 1994), he received a 9-month prison sentence for theft of private property. In the same year, Minh received an additional 3 years for robbery of private property.

Twice hearing the court sentence her son, the mother cried countless tears.

Not long after serving his sentence, in 1998, Minh was sentenced by the Supreme People's Court to 12 years in prison for robbery. While this sentence had not been carried out, two years later, he received an additional two years for intentional infliction of injury.

The sadness did not end for his old mother, as soon as he was released from prison, Minh became addicted to drugs. She always advised her son to think of her to "turn around" and start his life over. There was a time when he "changed his mind and changed his mind", making his mother happy. The only time his mother was comforted was when Minh got married.

"I just hope he has children, so his life will be somewhat different after many years of going to prison and committing crimes," the old mother shared. However, not long after his compulsory drug rehabilitation, in early 2017, Minh was sentenced by the Hanoi People's Court to 7 years in prison for illegal possession of drugs.

While awaiting execution of his drug sentence, Minh and his accomplices went on a robbery spree to get money to buy heroin. According to the case file, from December 6, 2017 to January 16, 2018, Minh and three accomplices committed many robberies in Hanoi. Of these, Minh participated in four robberies, appropriating property worth VND15.5 million.

For the above actions, Hanoi People's Court sentenced Minh to 9 years in prison for robbery, combining the two unexecuted sentences, the defendant received 21 years in prison.

Hearing the court announce and summarize the sentences for her son, she sobbed. As for her daughter-in-law, the woman who had never fully enjoyed the happiness of a wife, she could only stand there silently.

When Minh was escorted out of the courtroom, she dragged her feet with difficulty, trying to follow her son. She clung to each step, crying as she walked: "My son, I don't know if I still have time to see you." It took nearly 10 minutes to get down to the first floor, the van had taken Minh away, and without seeing her son, she cried out: "He's gone, he's gone."
