According to the indictment, at around 6:00 p.m. on December 29, 2017, Ha Ba Long, residing in Lac Xao town, Bolikhamxay province (Laos), came to meet and hired Ai to transport drugs to Vinh city and paid 30 million VND. Without a moment's thought, Ai immediately agreed. Ai drove Long to the edge of the forest to get a blue sack containing 5 heroin cakes, 8 kg of crystal meth and 2 packets of pink phien. Long put the drugs in the trunk of Ai's car and told Ai to go to Vinh bus station where someone would find him and deliver the drugs to them. After finishing the job, Long would pay Ai 30 million VND.

At around 7pm the same day, Quang Van Ai drove home to pick up his son, Quang Van Toan, to go with him. At around 8:30pm the same day, when Quang Van Ai went to Bam slope, Cam Son commune, Anh Son district (Nghe An), he was caught red-handed by the authorities and all the evidence was confiscated.

At the first instance trial held on April 18, the People's Court of Nghe An province sentenced defendant Nguyen Quang Ai to death for illegally transporting drugs. As for Quang Van Toan, Ai's son, he was with him but did not know he was transporting drugs, so no criminal charges were filed. Nguyen Van Ai appealed to the High People's Court for a lighter sentence.

At this trial, after receiving advice and explanations from his lawyer, defendant Quang Van Ai withdrew his appeal, expressed his remorse and wanted to submit a petition to the President for clemency. Therefore, the High People's Court suspended the appeal hearing of this case./.
