Mr Trump was asked not to talk about the collapse of the Soviet Union, but to evaluate the invasion of Iraq.
The Soviet Union collapsed for economic reasons, US President Donald Trump should no longer discuss the reasons for the collapse of the Soviet Union, but evaluate the US invasion of Iraq or the blockade of Cuba, Federation Councilor for Defense and Security Frants Klintsevich told Sputnik.
The Soviet Union collapsed not because of the war in Afghanistan, but for completely different reasons, primarily economic, Klintsevich said.
According to him, it is strange to judge the collapse of the Soviet Union "hastily, in the scope of one phrase".
"Frankly speaking, it is strange that they are in such a hurry, essentially, with just one phrase, as the US president did, to name the reasons for the collapse of the Soviet Union. And in general: with the assessment of our historical events, including the consequences of the Afghan war, we will find out for ourselves. Perhaps it would be better if Donald Trump looked back, reassessed the military invasion of Iraq or the meaningless blockade in all aspects of Cuba, which has been going on for decades," said Mr. Klintsevich.
