The Russian Federation will do everything possible to achieve a political settlement of the situation in Syria as soon as possible, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said at a discussion at the Raisina Dialogue political forum.

"I will be completely frank. In my opinion, the situation is more or less progressing towards a political solution. We will work a lot with other countries to bring this moment closer, but the burden of overcoming all these difficulties is very heavy," Mr. Ryabkov said, answering a question about how he sees the situation in Syria in 2020.

The armed conflict in Syria has been going on since 2011. By the end of 2017, victory over IS in Syria and Iraq had been declared. However, in some areas of Syria, the militants continue to be pursued. At present, the priority is the political settlement, the restoration of Syria and the return of refugees.

Agreements are being discussed in Astana and Geneva, and the Syrian national dialogue congress held on January 30 in Sochi was the first attempt since the start of the conflict to bring together the various negotiating parties on a unified platform.
