Professor Nguyen Ngoc Giao has passed away.

The scientist, who spent over 50 years teaching and made numerous contributions to the field of Physics, has passed away at the age of 80.

After a period of serious illness, Professor and People's Teacher Nguyen Ngoc Giao - Chairman of the Union of Science and Technology Associations of Ho Chi Minh City, passed away at his home on the afternoon of January 9th. The funeral service will take place from 1 PM on January 12th at the City Funeral Home.

Professor Nguyen Ngoc Giao was born in 1939 in Saigon, with his ancestral home in Ben Tre. During his youth, he attended Petrus Ky High School (now Le Hong Phong Specialized High School) from 1951 to 1954, before relocating to North Vietnam.

After completing his high school education, he became a student in the Physics Department at Hanoi University in 1958. Upon graduation, he was selected as a lecturer in Theoretical Physics, within the Physics Department of the university.

In 1972, he defended his doctoral thesis and was one of the first people to receive a doctorate in the Soviet Union under the Anglo-American model. Subsequently, he was sent as a senior intern at Moscow State University and taught at Hanoi University.

After the reunification of the country in 1975, he was assigned to work at the Saigon University of Science, which later became the University of Ho Chi Minh City, where he both taught and served in administration.

In 1990, he was elected Rector of the University of Ho Chi Minh City, and two years later he was awarded the title of professor. When the National University was established, Professor Giao was appointed Vice Director in charge of scientific research and international relations.

Professor Giao has dedicated over 50 years to education, training, scientific research, and social activities. The textbooks he wrote for various subjects have been used by students in the South for many years.

The professor's areas of expertise span a wide range, from Mathematics for Physics (Algebra, Calculus, Group Theory), Theoretical Physics (Field Theory, Elementary Particle Theory, Gravitational Field) to Philosophy in Physics.

He served for over 10 years as a member of the Council of Francophone Universities AUPELF-UREF (Conseil d' Administration). From 2000 to 2003, he was President of the Francophone University Organization for the Asia-Pacific Region (CONFRASIE).
