(Baonghean.vn) - For new drivers, learning the meaning of the symbols on the automatic gear lever is necessary, because these symbols are quite cumbersome and are English abbreviations. Therefore, to drive safely, drivers need to master the meanings of the symbols on the gear lever.

* A normal automatic transmission will have 4 gears P, R, N, Darranged in a straight line or in a zigzag or zigzag pattern... First, let's learn about these common letters.

- P (Parking):P is the parking number, used when parking, the handbrake can be pulled to increase safety, and limit damage to the gearbox if there is a strong impact on the car from behind (for example, if another car accidentally crashes into it).

- R (Reverse):Reverse gear, used when you want to reverse the car. Note: Do not shift into this gear when the car has not stopped completely. Before shifting into reverse, you should step on the brake pedal to ensure safety, then gradually release the brake to let the car reverse slowly.

- N (Neutral):Number N is also called Mo number - in fact, no gear is used, the car is in a natural state... You should not put the car in N number when it is moving because you will not be able to control the speed because the car's transmission has been cut off. In case of stopping at a red light, for safety, you should put the car in N number and pull the handbrake or step on the footbrake.

- D (Drive):D is forward gear, used when moving the vehicle forward in normal conditions on good road surfaces. In case of bad roads such as steep slopes, slippery surfaces, etc., you should switch to semi-automatic mode to ensure the engine is strong and the speed can be controlled.

* Depending on the vehicle model, there will be additional symbols and functions such as:

- S (Sport):Sport mode, similar to the M mode mentioned above to shift gears according to the driver's wishes.

- OD (Overdrive):Number for overspeed, downhill.

- L (Low):Low gear, used for heavy loads, uphill and downhill

- M (Manual):Operates like a manual transmission, allowing the vehicle to shift to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th gears and vice versa (switch to the “+” sign to increase the gear, the “-” sign to decrease the gear). However, the very important function of these gears is to support safe downhill driving.

- D1 (Drive 1), D2 (Drive 2):Use when needing to go slow, difficult road.

- B (Brake):Brake gear, similar to L gear. Used to brake with the engine when the vehicle is going downhill.
