Forty years ago, in February, China launched a massive attack on Vietnam's northern border provinces. After 30 days of fierce resistance from our army and people, on March 18, 1979, China announced its withdrawal. However, for the next 10 years, China did not withdraw all its troops as declared. The fighting continued, forcing Vietnam to maintain a large military force along the border. During those years, tens of thousands of young men enlisted to defend the nation's frontier.
