The 2022 World Cup could have 48 teams and 3 host nations.
Recently, FIFA has taken steps to expand the number of teams participating in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to 48, with two additional co-hosting countries: Oman and Kuwait.
According to the original plan, the 48-team World Cup finals would be implemented in 2026 and would include three countries: Canada, the United States, and Mexico. However, recently, the world's most powerful football governing body wants to make changes starting from the 2022 World Cup finals.
According to the plan currently under consideration, most matches will still be held in Qatar – which qualified for the 32-team event. The remaining matches will be held in Kuwait and Oman as part of the Middle Eastern World Cup plan.

FIFA's original plan was for the 2026 World Cup to be the first to feature 48 teams and three co-hosting nations.
Infantino also stated that the ongoing diplomatic boycott of Qatar by the Gulf Arab states is a major obstacle to co-hosting the World Cup, but he will find a way to implement this plan.
The final decision on this idea is expected to be announced next week when the FIFA council meets in Miami, before Infantino postpones it until June when FIFA's annual council meeting is held and the FIFA president is elected. If Qatar agrees to this change, Infantino will need the support of the 211 member federations.
