Causes of abnormal fuel consumption in cars
Below are the main reasons why your car suddenly consumes more gas than usual after a period of use.
1. Low tire pressure
![]() |
Low tire pressure leads to a larger friction area between the wheel and the road surface, the engine works harder due to high rolling resistance, causing increased fuel consumption. Therefore, maintaining stable tire pressure is one of the top considerations in saving fuel as well as ensuring tire life. Normally in Vietnam, standard tire pressure ranges from 2.2 - 2.5 kg.
2. Air filter is too dirty

Dirty air filters greatly affect the vehicle's operation. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to checking, maintaining and cleaning the air filter at authorized dealers periodically about every 3-6 months.
3. Forgetting to change the oil
![]() |
Forgetting to change the oil for a long time, the lubricating ability of the oil is no longer effective, leading to greater friction between engine parts when operating, causing the engine to heat up, so the vehicle will consume more gas than usual. At the same time, forgetting to change the oil significantly reduces engine life.
4. Corroded or dirty spark plugs
![]() |
Although this is a very small detail in the car, it is very important for every car.car. Many experienced drivers can identify the condition of the vehicle by the color of the spark plug. Worn or dirty spark plugs can cause the vehicle to misfire, misfire, or burn incompletely. Note that dirty spark plugs will reduce the life of the spark plug and make the vehicle consume more fuel.
5. Cooling system failure
![]() |
A broken temperature sensor causes the ECU to not recognize the engine's state, defaulting to operating in a cold state, causing the system to inject more fuel to warm up the engine, causing fuel consumption. If prolonged, it will damage the engine. Therefore, it should be checked regularly to ensure the cooling system is operating normally to avoid waste and other damage.
6. Clogged drain
![]() |
Any obstruction in the exhaust system increases exhaust pressure, thereby increasing fuel consumption. If the exhaust pipe shows signs of being dented due to a collision, try to restore it to its original condition. If the exhaust pipe feels clogged or blocked, use specialized testing tools to check and find the cause. If it is found to be due to the pressure difference between the intake and exhaust lines, it is likely that the catalytic converter is damaged.
