(Baonghean.vn) - At the VFF press conference held this afternoon (March 13), Vice President Tran Quoc Tuan revealed the possibility of sending the Vietnam National Team to participate in the King Cup 2019.

This is an annual tournament organized by the Football Association of Thailand since 1968. The tournament usually brings together 4 teams to compete. Besides the host team, the remaining 3 guests of the King's Cup are all top teams of the continent or mid-level teams in Europe and Africa.

Thailand is the team that has won the most championships, with 15 times. At the 2018 King's Cup, the Slovakian team led by midfielder Marek Hamsik won the title after defeating the Thai team with a score of 3 - 2. Meanwhile, the representative from Africa, Gabon, ranked 3rd and the host of the 2019 Asian Cup, UAE, ranked last.

According to statistics, the Vietnam team has only participated in the King Cup once. In the tournament held in 2006, coach Alfred Riedl and his team faced host Thailand and two other guests, the Singapore team and the Kazakhstan team. The four teams competed in a round robin to select the two best teams to play in the final.

After 3 matches (losing to Thailand 1-2, winning Kazakhstan 2-1 and winning Singapore 3-2), Vietnam reached the final match against the host team. After 90 minutes of competition, Thailand won the championship with a 3-1 victory. Striker Phan Thanh Binh won the Golden Boot (3 goals).

It is known that if they participate in the King Cup 2019, Coach Park Hang-seo and his team will compete with the Thai team and two guests, the Chinese team and the Indian team. The tournament will take place in early June, held at Rajamangala Stadium in the capital Bangkok./.
