On March 28, the People's Court of Quy Hop district opened a public first-instance criminal trial for the defendants Nguyen Truong Sa (born 1984), Tran Van Thang (born 1985), Hoang Dinh Hau (born 1993) and Hoang Cong Toan (born 1989) for the crime of "gambling".
According to the indictment, during the 2018 World Cup, on July 13, Nguyen Truong Sa in Minh Tan hamlet, Minh Hop commune (Quy Hop) gambled by betting on football and betting on lottery numbers with many different people.

Specifically, in the match between the Swedish team and the Swiss team, Sa accepted football bets with Tran Van Thang, residing in Van Truong hamlet, Van Loi commune (Quy Hop), on many different bets such as the number of goals in the first half, the number of goals in the second half, the number of goals in the whole match... with the total amount Sa bet with Thang being 7 million VND.
Also in this match, Sa continued to bet with Hoang Dinh Hau in Lien Xuan hamlet, Nghia Xuan commune (Quy Hop) for 5 million VND. Sa also bet with Nguyen Duong Phi on many different matches for 3 million VND.
Not only betting on football, at this time Sa also recorded lottery numbers with Hoang Cong Toan in Tan My hamlet, Tam Hop commune (Quy Hop) for the amount of 7.7 million VND.
At the investigation agency, Nguyen Truong Sa and his accomplices honestly confessed their gambling behavior. The total amount of money that defendant Sa must bear criminal responsibility for is 22.7 million VND. Tran Van Thang must bear criminal responsibility for 7 million VND. Hoang Dinh Hau must bear criminal responsibility for 5 million VND and Hoang Cong Toan must bear criminal responsibility for 7.7 million VND.
As for Nguyen Duong Phi, the investigation results determined that Phi participated in gambling with Sa for 3 million VND, not to the extent of criminal prosecution, so the investigation agency only imposed an administrative penalty.
The panel sentenced defendant Nguyen Truong Sa to 18 months in prison, suspended. Defendants Nguyen Truong Sa, Tran Van Thang, Hoang Dinh Hau and Hoang Cong Toan were fined a total of VND89 million for “gambling”.
