On March 27, US President Donald Trump demanded that Russia withdraw its troops from Venezuela. In case Russia does not leave Venezuela, "all options are open". Previously, Venezuelan media reported that two Russian air force planes landed at Venezuela's Maiquetia International Airport on March 22, carrying a senior official and nearly 100 soldiers. The US confirmed that this group of soldiers included Russian special forces and cybersecurity experts.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Russia "does not change the balance of forces in the region, does not threaten anyone like the US is doing" and that Moscow "does not plan to establish a military base in Venezuela". "They are implementing agreements in the field of military-technical cooperation (between Russia and Venezuela). They will stay as long as necessary. Russia does not violate anything, including international agreements or Venezuelan law," Ms. Zakharova said.

The BBC has agreed to pay damages to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko over a story that falsely claimed Kiev paid $400,000 to secure a meeting with US President Donald Trump. The BBC apologized to Poroshenko on March 28 and said it would pay the Ukrainian leader damages and legal costs. The British broadcaster also said it would issue a joint statement with Kiev in an open court.

President Poroshenko, who is seeking another term in office in elections this weekend, has filed a lawsuit against the BBC over a May 2018 report that Kiev paid the US president's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen "an undisclosed sum of at least $400,000" to arrange a meeting at the White House in June 2017.

US President Donald Trump on March 28 warned of closing the southern border with Mexico, complaining that Mexico and several other Central American countries have not done enough to stop the wave of immigrants pouring into the US.

The US leader's warning came after a sharp increase in the number of illegal immigrant families apprehended at the border. US Customs and Border Protection Director Kevin McAleenan postponed his planned appearance before Congress on March 27 to travel to the southern border. Mr. McAleenan said that the US Border Patrol apprehended more than 55,000 family members of illegal immigrants in March, up 500% compared to 2018.
