The new Japanese imperial era will be called “Reiwa” (Reiwa) to replace the current Heisei (Heisei) era from May 1. The announcement of the new era name comes one month before the historic April 30 date when Emperor Akihito will officially abdicate and hand over the “chrysanthemum throne” to his son Naruhito.
The name of this era, which is pronounced in Sino-Vietnamese as "Lễ Hòa", was chosen from five proposals. The Japan Times quoted Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as saying that the new era name will "signal a new era full of hope". Meanwhile, Emperor Akihito's reign is called "Heisei", which means "peace reigns everywhere".
