Lao and Thai students celebrate traditional New Year

(Baonghean.vn) - The traditional New Year Bunpimay (Laos) and Songkran (Thailand) are recreated in a warm, joyful atmosphere with graceful dances and best wishes for the New Year.

These are the activities in the program to celebrate the traditional New Year Bunpimay and Songkran which took place on the morning of April 12 at Vinh University.

Attending the event were Comrade Luong Thanh Hai - Member of the Provincial Party Executive Committee, Head of the Provincial Ethnic Committee, along with representatives from the Vietnam - Laos Friendship Association; Vietnam - Thailand Friendship Association, Liaison Committee of volunteer military units and experts; more than 500 Lao and Thai students studying and researching at Vinh University.

The ritual of tying a string around the wrist prays for favorable weather, bringing vitality to the country, good crops; and for every family to welcome a lucky and happy new year.

Bunpimay and Songkran (also known as Water Festival) are traditional New Year holidays of the Lao and Thai people, taking place from April 13 to April 15 every year with many rituals such as bathing Buddha statues, water-splashing, tying wrist strings... with the meaning of praying for the rainy season to come, bringing vitality to the country, good crops; every family welcomes a lucky and happy new year.

At the ceremony, representatives of Vinh University, Vietnam - Laos Friendship Association, Vietnam - Thailand Friendship Association sent best wishes to Lao and Thai students on the occasion of the National Day of the two countries; hoping that they will study hard, practice well, contribute to making their homeland increasingly prosperous, and build ASEAN into a strong, united and friendly community.

Representatives of the Provincial Ethnic Committee presented scholarships to international students.

On this occasion, the Vietnam - Laos Friendship Association of Nghe An province awarded scholarships to 5 Lao students and certificates of merit to 4 Thai students.

Previously, Vinh University organized many exciting cultural, sports and exchange activities with strong identities for more than 500 Lao and Thai students studying at Vinh University.
