Nghe An: "Cool vegetables" sell well on the first hot day, farmers earn good income

Ms. Hoa shared: Understanding the consumption needs of people in the summer is to use cool vegetables, so this year the family grows more than every year.
Although the weather at the beginning of the season was not very favorable, with little rain, thanks to the application of science and technology and proactive irrigation, vegetables were still picked every day to bring to the market.

According to Ms. Hoa, summer vegetables are easy to grow, require little care, and do not require much seed and fertilizer costs. During the dry months, with adequate watering, vegetables grow well, the harvest time will be shorter, and the selling price will also be higher. Currently, green vegetables cost 4,000 - 5,000 VND/bunch, bitter melon 15,000 VND/kg; winter melon 8,000 VND/kg; on average, Ms. Hoa earns 150,000 - 200,000 VND per day from vegetables.
For Ms. Nguyen Thi Giang's family in village 4, Cam Son commune, these hot days are busy with 4 sao of off-season cucumbers that are being harvested. Ms. Giang said: On hot days, cucumberseasy to consume, moreover this is an off-season melon so few households grow it, so there are no melons to sell to traders.

Although growing cucumbers off-season, thanks to her mastery of the technique and careful care, Ms. Giang's 4 sao of cucumbers yielded high yields, reaching 1.5 tons/sao. Each day she harvested the most 80 kg of cucumbers, the least 40 - 50 kg; with the current selling price of 12,000 VND/kg, on average Ms. Giang earned more than 500,000 VND per day.
Mr. Nguyen Truong Phi - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Anh Son district said: In recent years, farmers in Anh Son district have been very quick in choosing crops for each crop, suitable for the weather for easy consumption; in this hot season, the main crops are amaranth, Malabar spinach, sweet potato leaves, winter melon, bitter melon, squash, and cucumber.
According to the actual assessment of the people, cool summer vegetables are very easy to grow and do not require much care, especially the cost from planting to harvesting is not high, the turnaround time is fast.

During hot weather like now, the demand for green vegetables is even greater, the district encourages people to expand the vegetable growing area in areas with proactive irrigation by crop rotation and intercropping to increase income.
