The Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front deeply regret to announce:

General Le Duc Anh was born on December 1, 1920 in Loc An commune, Phu Loc district, Thua Thien-Hue province; permanent residence at 5A Hoang Dieu, Quan Thanh ward, Ba Dinh district, Hanoi city.

Participated in revolutionary activities in 1937; joined the Communist Party of Vietnam in May 1938. Former member of the Central Committee of the Party, terms IV, V, VI, VII, VIII; Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party, term VII; Member of the Politburo, terms V, VI, VII, VIII; Standing Committee of the Politburo, term VIII; President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (from September 1992 to December 1997); Advisor to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam (from 1997 to April 2001). National Assembly delegate, terms VI, VIII, IX.

After a period of serious illness, despite the Party, State, professors and doctors' devoted treatment and the wholehearted care of his family, due to old age and serious illness, he passed away at 8:10 p.m. on April 22, 2019 (March 18, Ky Hoi year), at 5A Hoang Dieu, Quan Thanh ward, Ba Dinh district, Hanoi city.

During more than 80 years of revolutionary activities, he made many great contributions to the glorious revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation.

He was awarded the Gold Star Order; First Class Military Exploit Order; First Class Feat of Arms Order; 80-year Party membership badge and many other noble Vietnamese and international orders and medals by the Party and State.

Comrade's passing is a great loss to our Party, State and people.

In memory of General Le Duc Anh, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front decided to hold the funeral of General Le Duc Anh with the State funeral rites.

Comrade Le Duc Anh (alias Nguyen Phu Hoa; Sau Nam), born on December 1, 1920; hometown: Loc An Commune, Phu Loc District, Thua Thien-Hue Province; permanent residence: 5A Hoang Dieu, Quan Thanh Ward, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi City. Participated in revolutionary activities in 1937; joined the Party in May 1938.

Work process

In 1937, he participated in the democratic movement in Phu Vang (Thua Thien Hue province); in May 1938, he was admitted to the Indochinese Communist Party.

In 1939-1943, the enemy terrorized strongly, lost contact, he went to Hoi An, Da Lat, Loc Ninh, Thu Dau Mot to participate in activities in Friendship Associations.

In March 1944, he contacted the organization and was assigned to work in rubber unions in Loc Ninh, Quang Loi, Xa Can, and Xa Cat.

In early 1945, he was assigned the task of organizing loyal forces in the unions, preparing for armed struggle.

In August 1945, he was assigned to command the uprising to seize power in rubber plantations and the two districts of Hon Quan and Bu Dop, Binh Phuoc province. During this time, he joined the Army, commanded the seizure of power in Loc Ninh, participated in the provisional provincial committee, and was in charge of the military in the north of Thu Dau Mot province.

From November 1946 to October 1948, he was Political Commissar of Squadron 1 (later Regiment 301), Regimental Committee Member, and Provincial Committee Member of Thu Dau Mot.

From October 1948 to December 1948, he served as Chief of Staff of Zone 7 and Military Region Commissioner.

From January 1949 to October 1949, he served as Chief of Staff of Zone 8 and Military Region Commissioner.

From November 1949 to May 1950, he served as Chief of Staff of Saigon-Cho Lon Military Region and Military Region Commissioner.

From June 1950 to December 1950, he served as Chief of Staff of Zone 7.

In January 1951, he became Deputy Chief of Staff of the Southern Command.

In May 1955, he was appointed Deputy Director of the Operations Department, General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army.

In October 1957, he was appointed First Deputy Director of the Military Department, General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army.

In December 1958, he was awarded the rank of Colonel of the Vietnam People's Army by the Party and State.

In August 1961, he was appointed Director of the Military Department, General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army.

In August 1963, he was appointed Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army.

In August 1965, he was appointed Chief of Staff of the Southern Command and member of the Military Commission of the Region.

In 1968, he held the position of Deputy Commander of the Southern Command and member of the Military Commission of the Region.

In 1969, he held the position of Commander of Zone 9 and Deputy Secretary of the Zone Party Committee.

In 1974, he held the position of Deputy Commander of the Southern Command and member of the Military Commission of the Region. He was promoted by the Party and State from Colonel to Lieutenant General of the Vietnam People's Army (April 1974).

In 1975, he held the position of Deputy Commander of the Ho Chi Minh Campaign and Commander of the Southwest Wing.

In May 1976, he was appointed Commander of Military Region 9 and Secretary of the Military Region Party Committee.

At the 4th National Party Congress (December 1976), he was elected to the Party Central Committee.

In June 1978, he was appointed Commander and Political Commissar of Military Region 7, member of the Central Military Commission.

In January 1981, he was promoted to the rank of Senior Lieutenant General of the Vietnam People's Army by the Party and State.

In June 1981, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Defense and Commander of the Vietnamese Volunteer Army in Cambodia.

At the 5th National Party Congress (March 1982), he was elected to the Party Central Committee and was elected by the Central Committee as a member of the Politburo.

In December 1984, he was promoted to the rank of General of the Vietnam People's Army by the Party and State.
