73 years of victory over Nazi Germany: Evil cannot rise again

The victory over Nazi Germany helped the world escape “the most terrible nightmare in history”. The worrying thing is that this “nightmare” seems to be returning.

The horrifying cruelty of Nazi Germany

With the goal of "building invasion machines" to launch wars and redistribute colonies globally, emerging imperialist countries such as Germany - Japan - Italy formed the "Axis" alliance to launch World War II.

Not only causing enormous material damage to the occupied countries, the fascist "Axis", especially Nazi Germany, also became "the biggest nightmare in world history" when committing genocide against the Jews and massacring many other ethnic groups.

In 1939, Nazi leader Adolf Hitler publicly declared: “The Jewish race in Europe will be destroyed” and before invading Poland, he also ordered the German army: “Kill every man, woman, and child who has Polish blood or speaks Polish; only then will we gain the living space we need.”

To incite German soldiers to commit barbaric acts of murder, the Nazis intensified the propaganda machine about the so-called “Aryan superior race” of the German people and called on soldiers to “kill all inferior races” such as Jews, Gypsies and Slavs.

The world can never forget the famous saying of Joseph Goebbels - Minister of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda of Nazi Germany - when he preached about how to "indoctrinate" cruel ideas into the heads of German soldiers: "No matter how clever the propaganda technique is, it will be difficult to succeed if we cannot indoctrinate the most basic content that we want into the heads of the target audience on a regular and continuous basis."

Great victory of the Soviet Union and the allies

Faced with the extreme cruelty of Nazi Germany in the countries they invaded, the Soviet army and people bravely stood up to resist the attacks of Nazi Germany, causing serious damage to them. Within 2 years, from 1941 to 1943, dozens of Nazi divisions and brigades were destroyed. In 1943, after switching to a counter-offensive strategy, the Soviet Red Army liberated the Fatherland, then successively liberated Yugoslavia, Albania, Poland, Romania, Hungary and Czechoslovakia.

While the Soviet Red Army launched a fierce attack on the German army on the Eastern Front, the British and American armies opened the Western European front. With the great help of the resistance forces, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Italy were liberated one after another. At exactly 0:43 on May 9, 1945 Moscow time, on behalf of Nazi Germany, Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel signed the minutes confirming the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany.

The victory over Nazi Germany created the basic conditions for the Allies to launch a massive attack on the Axis to completely end World War II as well as open up opportunities for colonial countries to fight for the right to independence and self-determination of nations.

Also during those historic days, under the wise and talented leadership of President Ho Chi Minh and the Communist Party of Vietnam, the Vietnamese people united, took advantage of the strategic opportunity to carry out the General Uprising to seize power, creating the great victory of the August Revolution in 1945, establishing the Democratic Republic of Vietnam on September 2, 1945, freeing the nation from the slavery of French colonialism and Japanese fascism.

Evil cannot be allowed to rise.

The independence, freedom and peaceful life of the peoples of the world today have been achieved through great sacrifices and losses. However, while humanity and progressive people around the world are still striving to push society forward, there are still a group of opportunists and revisionists who want to "completely deny" the great contributions of the Soviet army and people in the fight against fascism.

More dangerously, they are trying to find ways to revive fascism in more sophisticated and cruel forms under the name of extremist organizations with selfish nationalist ideology and condemnable racist actions.

The Counter Extremism Project (CEP) of the Pew Research Center in the US, in a report titled “The Extremist Right on Facebook” published in 2018, expressed concern when a series of extremist organizations such as Greek Chapter of Combat 18, Traditionalist Workers Party, Scottish Nationalist Society, Angry White Boy and Be Active Front continuously posted content inciting violence on Facebook in recent times.

Although Facebook has shut down some of these organizations’ pages, according to CEP, many of these Facebook pages still openly sell items related to extremist and fascist organizations and spread content promoting fascism. CEP warns that this trend is increasing rapidly and can have a very negative impact on society due to the huge influence of this world’s largest social network.

Faced with the risk that fascism could rise at any time, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned in January 2015: “Any attempt to rewrite history and reconsider the Russian Federation’s contribution to the great victory in World War II is tantamount to recognizing the crimes of German fascism and paving the way for this deadly ideology to survive.”

Therefore, the anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany is not only an occasion to pay tribute to the great sacrifices of the Soviet army and people, but also an occasion to remind people around the world that the “nightmare” of fascism cannot return again. To do that, the peoples of the world, including Vietnam, must always uphold the spirit of solidarity, protect peace, but also be ready to fight resolutely so that evil cannot grow, even the smallest seeds.
