Young man slit taxi driver's throat once studied abroad in Australia
Huy used to be an international student in Australia but dropped out halfway through. He has a fair complexion and speaks calmly.
On May 10, District 7 Police, Ho Chi Minh City arrested Ta Khac Huy (25 years old, from Hai Phong) to investigate the case of slitting the throat of a taxi driver to rob him on Nguyen Van Linh Street.
Huy appeared fair-skinned, polite, and extremely calm when answering each question from the investigators. According to Huy, the cause of the incident stemmed from Huy's family's prohibition of love affairs.
After committing the crime, Huy returned to a hotel in District 10 and was arrested by the police. Photo: HT.
Huy comes from a wealthy family, his family owns a business in Hai Phong. After studying abroad in Australia from 2012 to 2017, Huy dropped out and returned home.
Not yet having a stable job, the young man met his girlfriend but was strongly opposed by his family.
At 2 p.m. on May 6, Huy took a Grab from a hotel in Ward 15 (District 10) to go to his aunt's house in Gia Phu apartment building (Binh Tan District), but no one answered his phone. "I ran out of money at that time, so I told the driver to take me to Aeon Mall Binh Tan supermarket and told him to go in and get money, but the intention was to not pay. Then I went around from the back door to the front door and called another taxi," Huy said.
The crime scene was examined by the police.
The young man then returned to the hotel and suddenly remembered that he had an acquaintance in District 7, so he asked the driver to take him to District 7 to borrow money. “When I got to Nguyen Van Linh Street, I called my parents at home to ask for the phone number of that acquaintance, but they didn’t answer. I didn’t know what to do, so I told the driver to go back to the acquaintance’s house in Binh Tan to try to borrow money.”
Huy also said that he had been staying at the hotel for many days but could not pay because he was too poor. However, when he got to his aunt's house, he could not get through by phone. Huy asked the driver to take him to District 7 to find a way to contact an acquaintance to borrow some money and at the same time ask for help finding a job during this difficult time.
Unable to contact the taxi driver on the way, when he reached Nguyen Van Linh, Huy had the idea of robbing the taxi driver. In the dark, the young man took out a fruit knife and attacked.
“This is the knife I bought before when I was preparing to go to Vung Tau to play, I bought it to peel fruit. After talking to the driver for about 15 minutes, I jumped up and attacked with the knife. I don’t remember the location, but I injured the driver,” Huy continued.
The young man also thought that the knife wound might not have affected the driver's life, so he resisted and chased after him.
“I came to Ho Chi Minh City because I wanted to change something about myself. Also because my family strongly forbade me from dating due to some reasons surrounding my circumstances. I believed that I could handle it, believed in my decision so I brought my girlfriend along,” the young man said.
The young man said the reason he stopped studying in Australia was because his visa expired. “But I still keep my results there. When I come back, I will continue studying again…” - Huy said.
It is known that after the robbery occurred, District 7 Police deployed forces to coordinate with related units, extracting images from security cameras to search. Huy was quickly arrested while hiding in a hotel in District 10.
The case is currently under investigation and processing.
