Three identical baby boys are born, an extremely rare case in the world with a rate of one in 200 million births.

Doctors at Tuyen Quang General Hospital said the successful cesarean section took place on May 13.

A 29-year-old pregnant woman in Yen Son is pregnant for the third time, having previously had cesarean sections in 2009 and 2012. This time, she is carrying triplets naturally, 35 weeks pregnant, including two breech babies.

On May 13, the pregnant woman was taken to Tuyen Quang General Hospital by her family for emergency treatment due to abdominal pain and ruptured membranes. Doctors immediately performed an emergency cesarean section.

"This is a difficult surgery because the pregnant woman has had two cesarean sections and is currently carrying triplets at the same time, which puts her at risk of uterine inertia, causing bleeding and even hemorrhagic shock, which is life-threatening," said Dr. Pham Thi Lan Huong, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

During the surgery, the doctor must proactively use drugs to increase uterine contractions to limit the risk. More difficult, two cesarean sections caused the mother's uterus to adhere to the abdominal wall, so the doctor had to perform both surgery and removal of adhesions.

After 40 tense minutes, 3 identical baby boys were born, weighing 2.1 kg, 2 kg and 1.7 kg respectively. All 3 babies were then transferred to the neonatal unit of the Pediatrics Department for care. This afternoon, one baby was released from the incubator. The mother's health after surgery is stable.

The pregnant woman said that she and her husband already had two girls and had no intention of getting pregnant again. When the doctor informed her that she was carrying triplets, she was very confused. She went for a pregnancy check-up at a hospital in Hanoi and was advised and guided by the doctor, so she decided to give birth.

During her pregnancy, the doctor warned her of a high risk of premature birth, so she was asked to limit her movements and heavy work, and to pay attention to her health. During the 35 weeks of pregnancy, she only gained 11 kg.

According to statistics in the world, the rate of carrying fraternal triplets is about 1/4,000 cases, while the rate of carrying triplets naturally in the same egg is extremely rare at 1/200 million cases. With cases of giving birth to identical triplets, maintaining the pregnancy is also very difficult, most of them are born prematurely.
