Accordingly, on May 25, the Ky Son District Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Station collected samples of sick pigs in 4 locations: Huoi Lau Village, Bao Nam Commune; Canh Village, Ta Ca Commune; Huoi Le Village, Keng Du Commune and Pieng Lau Village, Na Loi Commune.

By the late afternoon of May 26, the Veterinary Agency of Region III had positive test results for African swine fever for the above 4 samples.

Mr. Nguyen Cong Hieu - Head of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Station of Ky Son district said that the unit has sent veterinary staff to the area, together with local authorities to count the number of pigs infected with the disease in households to proceed with the destruction. In the immediate future, the district will provide each commune with 1 ton of lime powder, 22 liters of chemicals, sprayers, and protective gear to fight the epidemic.

"To reduce difficulties for district veterinary staff, on May 25, the District Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Station trained all veterinary staff in communes in the district on how to collect samples of sick pigs and preserve specimens for testing," said Mr. Hieu.

It is estimated that the cause of the African swine fever outbreak in Ky Son may be due to the Khmu people in remote areas often buying pork products from street vendors for food, so the virus spread into the village. In fact, the villages where the outbreak has just occurred are mainly inhabited by Khmu people.

Thus, by May 26, in Ky Son district, there were 7 communes recorded with African swine fever, including: Muong Tip, Huu Kiem, Bao Thang, Bao Nam, Keng Du, Na Loi and Ta Ca.

There is a risk that this remote border district will have a wider outbreak of African swine fever, as sick and dead pigs are still occurring in the communes.
