"I'll tell you straight up, I was never a fan of that war. I thought it was a terrible war and it was far away" - US President Donald Trump answered British journalist Piers Morgan on TV channelITV, broadcast on June 5.

Mr Trump was speaking while in the UK, preparing to attend the 75th anniversary of the Allied landings on Normandy Beach (known as D-Day) to repel Nazi Germany during World War II.

"At that time, no one had heard of this country, but today they (Vietnam) are doing very well. In terms of trade, they are good negotiators and great businessmen," Mr. Trump said in the interview.

The US leader affirmed: "This is not like me fighting the Nazis, fighting Hitler. I was like many people at that time. At that time, I did not go out to protest and say I would go to Canada to live... That war is not something we (the US) should have participated in."

When asked by journalist Piers Morgan whether Mr. Trump would like to serve in another war, President Trump replied that it would be an "honor" for him to do so.

However, on the issue of not serving in the military before, Mr. Trump said he had increased money for the US military as compensation and that "we are rebuilding the military at a level never seen before."

According to news agencyAFPTrump graduated from the Wharton School of Finance in 1968. However, shortly after leaving school, he was diagnosed with heel spurs and was exempted from military service. He had previously been exempted from military service four times because he was still in school.
