The head of Singapore's delegation to the United Nations also added: "It is an honor to represent Singapore and vote for Vietnam. Singapore has an excellent relationship with Vietnam and we are confident that Vietnam will perform this role excellently."
Ambassador Burhan Gafoor posted a photo of him voting and a photo with Deputy Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung and Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy - Head of the Vietnamese Delegation to the United Nations at the United Nations headquarters.
Previously, on the evening of June 7 (Vietnam time), the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly announced that Vietnam was elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2020-2021 term with an almost absolute number of votes of 192/193.
This is considered a record number of votes because according to regulations, a candidate for this position only needs to receive a number of votes equal to or more than 70% of the total number of UN member countries participating in the vote (ie about 128, 129 votes), not counting blank votes with no opinion or countries that were stripped of the right to vote due to not fulfilling their financial contribution responsibilities to the activities of the United Nations.
With this result, Vietnam will replace Kuwait at the United Nations Security Council from January 1, 2020.
