The engine control system (ECU or ECM, PCM) is one of the most important parts, considered the "brain" of the car, so when it malfunctions, it can cause a series of problems for the car.
The ECU receives information from many different sensors of the car engine, and uses this information to calculate and adjust engine operation and fuel consumption to achieve optimal efficiency and power in each situation.

In modern cars, the ECU controls almost all the basic functions of the car. When the ECU malfunctions, it can cause a number of problems for the car and in some cases, it can cause the car to not move. Usually, when there is a problem, the ECU will give off a number of symptoms that the driver can recognize.
1. Check-Engine light is on
The Check-Engine light, also known as the Goldfish light, usually comes on when the computer detects a problem with a sensor or circuit.

However, there are cases where the ECU gives a false or incorrect Check-Engine signal. Scanning the computer for errors may reveal whether the problem is in the ECU or elsewhere.
2. The car stalls or won't start
Another sign of an ECU problem is an erratic engine performance. A computer error can cause the car to stall or not start at random times. These symptoms may come and go, and may be sporadic or constant.

If something is wrong with the ECU, it can mess with the fuel consumption and valve timing of the engine, negatively affecting performance. A faulty ECU can cause the vehicle to suddenly consume more fuel, lose power, and slow down acceleration.
4. Car is difficult to start
Another symptom of an ECU problem is that the car will not, or will be difficult to start. If the ECU is completely damaged, the car will not start or roll. The engine may still turn over, but it will not start without receiving a “command” from the computer. This symptom can also be caused by a number of other problems, so it is best to take the car to a service shop to have a professional inspect and diagnose the problem.
