Former Ukrainian President forms new party to 'protect the state'
Poroshenko's European Solidarity party may soon run in Ukraine's parliamentary elections, opposing the new government in Kiev.
In an interview with the Glavcom portal, former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said he would not allow the country to turn towards Russia or the process of the country's accession to Europe to be delayed.
Former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko announced the creation of a new party called European Solidarity. |
Accordingly, he has founded a political party called “European Solidarity”, which will soon run in the upcoming Ukrainian parliamentary elections. When asked “are you sure that the European Solidarity Party is the only force capable of withstanding Russia’s revenge in the next parliament”, Mr. Poroshenko smiled and said confidently: “I have to admit that is true”.
“The roar of a bulldozer trying to destroy the spiritual foundations of our state is audible,” Poroshenko wrote on Twitter. “European Solidarity is a special political force capable of defending our state!”
According to the former President of Ukraine, the foundation of the Ukrainian nation lies in its army, language and faith.
In his national message on Ukraine's Unity Day, Poroshenko stressed: "Ukraine is a unified country, using one national language - this is written in the Ukrainian Constitution. There will be no federalization." According to him, Kiev is trying to regain sovereignty over territories that are currently outside the government's control.
Moscow officials and some Ukrainian opposition politicians say Kiev should federalize Ukraine, which would give more autonomy to regions, to pave the way for resolving the five-year crisis in the east of the country.
“European unity knows the way to the EU and NATO better than other political forces. EU and NATO integration is like riding a bicycle. You can’t stand still, because you will fall. We will not let the country collapse! We are like a GPS target, which will show the exact path and will not abandon the right path. We can win and solve the most difficult tasks,” Poroshenko wrote on his personal Facebook page.
Mr. Poroshenko, when he was President of Ukraine, rejected the possibility of federalizing the country, which was proposed by Russia and some Ukrainian political forces.
