Former President of Ukraine Piotr Poroshenko called the resolution adopted by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe - PACE on the Russian Federation "the first serious diplomatic blow" and a "strong challenge" to Kiev.

On Tuesday evening, PACE adopted a resolution inviting the Russian delegation to the June session, although the possibility of challenging its authority remains. The resolution also made clear that the delegation’s rights to vote, speak and be represented will not be restricted by sanctions. Russia has applied to confirm its authority at PACE.

The decision to reinstate Russia to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe is seen as a strong challenge for Ukraine, Piotr Poroshenko wrote on his personal page on Tuesday.

He also believes that the resolution adopted by PACE is the “first serious diplomatic blow” Ukraine has received in the past five years.

“We did not allow this blow before. But now it is a blow not only to Ukraine, but also to the fundamental values of Europe, when one of them is chosen over the other,” Poroshenko added.
