(Baonghean.vn) - The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine has just coordinated with the Do Luong district government to destroy the largest number of pigs infected with African swine fever in the province since the outbreak, with 256 pigs, total weight over 13 tons.

Previously, on July 31, the Veterinary Agency of Region III had test results of sick pigs from Mr. Nam's farm positive for African swine fever. Because the number of pigs was up to 256, weighing over 13 tons, the specialized agency had to hire a machine to dig 3 holes to destroy them.

Mr. Nguyen Canh Nam, the owner of the pig farm, said that his family has been raising pigs for 10 years. The reason his pig farm was infected with the disease could be because traders had previously come to buy pigs for slaughter, the virus could have spread from the means of transport, or the shoes and clothes of those who bought the pigs.

After the authorities destroyed all the pigs in the farm, Mr. Nam's family hired 4 workers to clear the bushes, cut all the grass on both sides of the road, and bought 1 ton of lime powder to sprinkle all over the farm and pig pens. Hoa Son commune provided the family with 5 liters of chemicals to spray disinfectant inside and outside the pig farm for 1 month.

Mr. Ngo Duc Quynh - Deputy Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine added: Since the outbreak of African swine fever in Nghe An, a number of pig farms in Dien Yen commune (Dien Chau), Nam Nghia (Nam Dan)... have been infected, but the pig farm in Hoa Son commune (Do Luong) has the largest number of pigs destroyed in the province./.
