UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet said the new US sanctions against Venezuela will negatively affect the fundamental rights of Venezuelan citizens and could worsen the economic crisis in the country.

This was stated in Bachelet's statement, released on Thursday in Geneva.

According to her, despite the fact that the new sanctions do not technically apply to activities related to food, clothing and medicine, "they could exacerbate the crisis for millions of Venezuelans, moreover, financial institutions around the world that have commercial relations with the US and Venezuelan governments are likely to comply with the excessive demands".

Bachelet recalled that the economic crisis in Venezuela began before the first sanctions were imposed. However, the restrictions introduced in August 2017 and in January 2019 have exacerbated the consequences of the crisis and the humanitarian situation in the country.

“There is ample evidence that large-scale unilateral sanctions can ultimately deprive people of fundamental human rights, including economic rights, as well as their rights to food and health, and can create barriers to the delivery of humanitarian aid,” the OHCHR High Commissioner added.
