You Wenze, spokesman for the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National People's Congress of China, on August 17 criticized some US congressmen for making wrong comments on the Hong Kong issue.
Mr. You Wenze affirmed that recent illegal activities in Hong Kong, especially the extreme violence, are serious violations of the Constitution of China, the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the laws on the national flag and national emblem of China as well as relevant laws and regulations of Hong Kong.
Such actions, which have also openly challenged the bottom line of the "one country, two systems" principle, have clearly violated the rule of law and order in Hong Kong and seriously threatened the safety and property of Hong Kong people, and must be punished in accordance with the law.
Mr. You Wenze added that some US congressmen are distorting the Hong Kong police's strict law enforcement and efforts in fighting crime and protecting social order as well as preventing violence....
Their comments violate the spirit of the law and constitute gross interference in China's internal affairs.
According to Mr. You Wenze, 7.5 million Hong Kong people and the Chinese people completely reject the actions of a small group of violent protesters, as well as any foreign interference.
Furthermore, impunity for illegal actions can erode the authority of the law, and can undermine the rule of law.
