93-year-old doctor still teaches surgery

Professor Harold Ellis has dedicated 71 years to the British medical profession, now teaches anatomy five days a week and has no plans to retire.

Ellis was born in 1926 to a barber father and a seamstress mother. He is one of the longest-serving medical professionals in the UK and has saved thousands of lives.

In July 1948, the British Public Health Service (NHS) was established. At the same time, Ellis graduated from Oxford University's medical school, began working in the NHS, and also studied as a surgeon at Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford.

After completing his residency, he became a surgeon, working in hospitals in major cities such as Oxford, London, Sheffield, and Northampton. From 1960 to 1989, Ellis was chief surgeon and professor of anatomy at Westminster Hospital.

At the age of 63, Harold began teaching Anatomy at Cambridge University. He later moved to Guy's Hospital, Southwark, London, where he has been ever since. Today, he still teaches from Monday to Friday.

Ellis said he was happy to have dedicated his life to the NHS and was happy with his current teaching job, which has seen him witness many changes in the medical profession.

"People's expectations for health care today are much higher than they used to be. When I first started my career, if someone lived to around 60 years old, they were considered very old. In addition, the cost of medicine and medical equipment is also cheaper than today," he shared.

The professor has no plans to retire. "I always tell my colleagues that when they think I'm too old, let me know, and I'll quit," he said.
