Mike Morn, leader of Germany's Democratic Union party, said that Russia's restrictive measures in response to EU sanctions have damaged Germany's agricultural sector, and that dialogue with Moscow is needed.

"We are not involved in the EU's measures to sanction Russia. But we are affected by Russia's retaliation, especially on agriculture," said Mr. Mike Morning.

According to the leader of the Democratic Union party, more than ever, East Germans want bilateral relations with Russia to normalize again. "In East Germany, German-Russian relations were closer and more intimate than in West Germany," Mr. Morning said.

Previously, Chairman of the Economic and Energy Committee of the German Parliament Klaus Ernst also admitted that economic sanctions against Russia are useless and contrary to international law.

Mr. Klaus Ernst said that imposing economic sanctions on Russia damages trade relations between Moscow and the EU, negatively affecting the prosperity and success of the German trade sector.

Since 2014, the EU has imposed sanctions on Russia, following the annexation of Crimea. The measures have been repeatedly extended and expanded. Negotiations on visa exemptions and cooperation agreements have been postponed; Russian individuals and organizations are banned from entering EU countries and their assets are frozen.

In response, Russia has imposed a ban on the import of certain goods and food from EU countries.
