Nearly 300 former US foreign policy and national security officials have signed a letter supporting the Democrats' impeachment inquiry into US President Donald Trump amid the scandal over his phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
In a letter released on September 27, the former officials wrote that Mr. Trump's actions related to his efforts to urge President Zelensky to open an investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden created a "profound national security concern" for the United States.
They said they did not want to prejudge the entire case or the congressional deliberations, but stressed: "What we have learned is serious enough to warrant impeachment."
These former officials also commented that President Trump appeared to have abused the power and resources of the administration to "invite" more foreign interference in America's democratic processes.
The letter was signed by many former officials under former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush, including former Director of the US National Counterterrorism Center Matthew Olsen./
