After 7 years on the run, the robber received a 7-year prison sentence.
(Baonghean.vn) - Nguyen Van Diep, along with his accomplices, committed a robbery at a mining site in Tan Hop commune, Tan Ky district in 2012. He fled and was arrested in Lam Dong province after being wanted for 7 years.
On the afternoon of October 15th, the Tan Ky District People's Court tried the criminal case against Nguyen Van Diep (born in 1992), residing in Bau Sen hamlet, Giai Xuan commune, for the crime of robbery.
According to the indictment, on the afternoon of July 31, 2012, Truong Cong Dai (born 1992), Cao Xuan Lam (born 1990), Nguyen Van Phong (born 1990), Nguyen Van Thuong (born 1995), all residing in Giai Xuan commune; Bui Van Hao (born 1996) and Nguyen Van Chinh (born 1992), both residing in Long Tho hamlet, Giai Xuan commune; Bui Duy Tan (born 1995), Truong Van Thai (born 1994), Tran Van Hung (born 1994), and Ta Danh Son (born 1993), all residing in Nghia Hoan commune, along with a young man named Hoang (Bo), conspired to go to the ore mining site to threaten and drive away the workers in order to steal ore for resale.
Upon reaching the Xuan Tien intersection in Giai Xuan commune, the group met Nguyen Trung Chin (born in 1986) and Nguyen Van Thuong (born in 1995), both residing in Giai Xuan commune. The group then went up to the Vinh slope area to talk. There, Chin told Dai, Hung, Minh, Sang, Thuong, Chinh, and Diep in the Tho ethnic language: “If we’re going to do it, we’ll do it properly; if not, then we won’t. Let’s go and break it down; if we find ore, we’ll take it. If we’re going to do it, we’ll do it like that.”

Chín told everyone to stop about 80 meters from the tin ore mining shack in the Hao stream area, Tan Hop commune, which is operated by Phu Hung Co., Ltd. Chín told Chinh and Diep to stay behind to guard the vehicle and keep watch for passersby, while Hao, Phong, and Thuong went around the mining shack to switch off the power. Upon discovering that someone had broken into the shack and cut the power, Nguyen Cong Binh, the security guard at the shack, reported the incident to Nguyen Van Tien.
At the same time, Chin, Hung, Sang, Dai, Minh, Lam, Hoang, Van Hung, Tan, Thai, and Son threw bricks and stones at the shack. Seeing this, Binh panicked and ran down the Hao ravine, while Tien hid under the wooden platform.
The suspects, armed with knives, smashed some items in the shack and stole nine bags of ore that were stored there. Chín, along with Phong, Hùng, Thái, Sáng, Lâm, Hoàng, Hào, and Tân, each carried a bag of ore to the motorbike parking area. Seeing this, Điệp approached and placed two bags of ore on the motorbike with Nguyễn Văn Hùng to take them back to Chín's house for safekeeping. At Chín's house, Văn Hùng and Điệp together carried the stolen bags of ore into Chín's main house and hid them in the rice storage area, then Hùng and Điệp went home.
Following the incident, the Tan Ky District Police mobilized forces to investigate and arrest the perpetrators. Simultaneously, on August 10, 2012, the Criminal Investigation Department of the Tan Ky District Police issued a decision to initiate criminal proceedings and indict the group of suspects involved for robbery. The property valuation report by the Tan Ky District Criminal Procedure Property Valuation Council dated December 20, 2012 concluded that the 9 bags of tin ore, with a total weight of 450 kg, were valued at 63 million VND.
Fearing arrest, Diep quickly fled the area on August 1, 2012. After an unsuccessful investigation, the Tan Ky District Police issued an arrest warrant for Nguyen Van Diep. On July 15, 2019, Diep was arrested by the Duc Trong District Police, Lam Dong Province, pursuant to the arrest warrant.
In this case, regarding Nguyen Trung Chin, after committing the crime, he fled the area, so the Tan Ky District Police Investigation Agency issued an arrest warrant; he will be prosecuted when apprehended. Regarding Van Hung, Dai, Sang, Chinh, Minh, Thuong, Lam, Hao, Phong, Tan, Son, Tran Hung, and Thai, they were tried by the Tan Ky District People's Court on May 9, 2013. As for the person named Hoang (Bo), the Police Investigation Agency is continuing its investigation; he will be prosecuted when sufficient evidence is available.
The court sentenced Diep to 7 years in prison.
