On October 28, Trinh Van Linh, residing in Co Do district, was sentenced to life in prison by the People's Court of Can Tho City for the crime of "Killing",forced to compensate the victim's family nearly 170 million dong.
According to the records, on the morning of April 10, Linh was carrying a shovel to build a dam in his garden when he saw a 50-year-old man - the owner of the adjacent land, planting bananas. The two got into an argument over a land dispute (before that, Mr. Linh had lost the case).
Suspecting that his neighbor was going to harm him, Linh took a shovel and hit him several times on the head, causing him to collapse on the spot. He then dragged the victim into the water hyacinth canal and went home.
The victim's body was found by relatives that afternoon. The autopsy results showed that the victim died of drowning after severe traumatic brain injury.
In court today, Mr. Linh admitted his guilt and expressed remorse for his actions.
