According to the investigation, in the early morning of November 14, Doan's group from Ho Chi Minh City rode two motorbikes, traveling more than 10 km to Can Duoc district to "buy goods". Discovering a three-wheeled vehicle parked in an empty lot in Long Trach commune with no one watching, one of them got on the motorbike and started the engine.

Lieutenant Tong Duy Tan (30 years old, investigation officer of Can Duoc District Police) and his teammates were patrolling nearby when they discovered the incident and immediately increased the speed to chase.

After chasing them for two kilometers, the police fired warning shots into the air to demand that the thieves stop, but to no avail. They used chili powder to fight back, forcing Lieutenant Tan and a police officer to fall onto the road. The three thieves left behind the stolen goods and escaped.

Lieutenant Tan was seriously injured and taken to the hospital but died two days later. He was promoted to the rank of captain ahead of schedule.

Two days later, Doan and Bao were arrested at their homes by Long An police detectives in coordination with Ho Chi Minh City police. The other man was also caught five days later.

Police seized many items of evidence such as a three-wheeled vehicle, a motorbike, an electric welding machine, a metal cutter, pepper spray, chili powder, an air gun, homemade knives and drug paraphernalia.

The three suspects confessed to three other successful robberies in Long An and Ho Chi Minh City. They said the chili powder used to attack the police was mixed with paint stripper and contained in homemade pepper spray.
