(Baonghean.vn) - For the past two years, the giant apple variety has been widely grown in alluvial lands of several localities in Con Cuong district (Nghe An), helping growers increase their income and contribute another product to the "mountain town".

In the days before Tet, on the sandbanks of Chi Khe commune, farmers are busy harvesting apples. Ms. Le Thi Lan, Quyet Tien village, Chi Khe commune, said that her family planted 4 sao of 3-year-old apple trees, equivalent to 150 trees. On average, each apple tree yields about 50 kg of fruit, with the current selling price of about 25,000 - 30,000 VND/kg.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoai's family, also in Quyet Tien village, Chi Khe commune, grows nearly 100 apple trees on 3 sao of land. She said that her family's apple garden has just started the harvest season, which lasts until the end of January. "This year's apple harvest is good and the price is higher, so my family will earn a significant amount of money during this Tet holiday," Ms. Hoai shared.

According to farmers, apple trees can be harvested after only 1 year, and only after 5-6 years do they need to be replaced, so the investment is not large. During the care process, it is only necessary to prune the fruit when the tree bears young fruit so that the tree can concentrate its nutrients on growing large fruit and not breaking branches.

Currently, in addition to wholesale to traders, the people of Chi Khe and Bong Khe communes also sell jujubes on Highway 7, along with some markets in the district to serve the people. According to calculations, after deducting costs, growing jujubes gives an average income of more than 10 million VND/sao.

Con Cuong mountainous district focuses on developing clean agriculture associated with tourism development, so diversifying agricultural products and gradually building typical products and specialties is extremely important.

In addition to orange trees and citrus trees, the district is currently encouraging people to change their crop structure and experiment with new varieties such as guava, green-skinned Thai jackfruit, and apple trees. Of these, apple trees are currently chosen by many households to grow on fertile land and fields.

Mr. Lo Van Ly - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Con Cuong district said: "The apple tree is grown in Con Cuong district with a total area of about 2.5 hectares. After several harvests, it has been shown that the apple tree has high economic value and relatively stable output. In the coming time, the district will continue to pay attention, support and take measures to help people feel secure in production, ensuring effective conversion of crop structure".
