The rules for President Trump's impeachment trial were passed by the U.S. Senate with unanimous agreement from Republican senators.

The U.S. Senate approved the rules for President Trump's impeachment trial by a clearly partisan vote of 53 to 47 (on January 21). This vote followed nearly 13 hours of debate.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer proposed 11 amendments to these rules, but all were rejected by Republican senators.

Schumer's proposed amendments are part of an effort by Democrats in both the Senate and the House to change the rules of the trial regarding summoning witnesses and requesting additional documents from the White House.

The Senate concluded its first day of discussions on the rules of the trial after a vote.
