Coach Pham Anh Tuan and new challenges at Hai Phong Club
(Baonghean.vn) - As a former player of Song Lam Nghe An, who was an assistant coach for 10 years, a head coach at the First Division once, and when coming to Hai Phong Club, Coach Pham Anh Tuan is embarking on the process of building and rebuilding the team with the hope of success in his first time as a captain at the V.League.
As a player, Pham Anh Tuan played as a right-back for SLNA and was in the same generation as famous players Van Sy Hung, Nguyen Huu Thang, Ngo Quang Truong, Phan Thanh Tuan... In the SLNA shirt, the former player wearing the number 12 shirt won many noble titles, typically the V.League championship in 2001.
Coach Pham Anh Tuan was born in 1970 in Vinh City. As a teenager, he did not have enough food or clothes to wear, so in order to become a professional football player, he had to go through many difficulties and complexes.
Accepted into SLNA, but due to his family's financial situation, he did not have a pair of good shoes to practice. For many years, former defender Pham Anh Tuan often waited for his senior players' practice sessions to pick up shoes to reuse.

If he finds an old shoe that is still usable, he will find another one to make a pair. This player is often seen on the training ground wearing different shoes, different styles and colors.
From those difficulties, Pham Anh Tuan rose to become a player of SLNA's first team and became an important part of the team during its golden age, reaping many historical achievements. The fiery playing style and steely spirit of this defender are also a specialty even though he is not tall.
After retiring, the former SLNA player went to study for a coaching license and started his youth training career. In the 2007 season, Pham Anh Tuan became the assistant coach of SLNA, then became the acting head coach of the First Division team, V. Ninh Binh Club.
Since 2009, when coach Nguyen Van Thinh returned to lead SLNA, he was chosen as an assistant. And in the context of the club having no sponsor, he and the Nghe An team finished V.League 2009 in 3rd place in a spectacular way.

When coach Nguyen Huu Thang took over SLNA in 2010, assistant Pham Anh Tuan was still trusted. In the past 10 years, the Nghe An team has gone through many generations of coaches such as Ngo Quang Truong and Nguyen Duc Thang, but few have been able to replace the role of this effective assistant from expertise to management.
V.League 2014 ended, Coach Huu Thang left and SLNA looked for a replacement. Meanwhile, not many people had an A-AFC license like Coach Pham Anh Tuan to be able to become a captain. Coach Pham Anh Tuan himself was also considered but in the end, Coach Quang Truong was the one chosen.
During his 10 years as assistant coach at SLNA, assistant Pham Anh Tuan had a rather large collection of titles, including the V.League championship, National Cup, and National Super Cup. But then, when SLNA experienced changes and outdated football practices, and partly due to family reasons, assistant Pham Anh Tuan left his hometown team when the V.League 2019 had not yet ended.
Even after that, SLNA's leadership still wanted Coach Pham Anh Tuan to stick with youth training. However, with his A-level, he was invited by Hai Phong Club to join the coaching staff of this team. After Coach Truong Viet Hoang left for Viettel, Coach Quang Truong was retained by Hai Phong. However, because Coach Quang Truong left on a secondment, he had to return to lead SLNA when Coach Duc Thang resigned and became Technical Director.

And by chance, the Hai Phong Club's leadership boldly brought Coach Pham Anh Tuan to be the team captain. Immediately after being trusted, he built for himself a team of assistants, including Coach Le Quoc Vuong and Pham Bui Minh - fellow countrymen who also grew up at SLNA. In particular, former midfielder Le Quoc Vuong will be like a powerful "advisor" for his senior in technical and tactical matters.
Coming to Hai Phong Club, the challenge for this Nghe An coach is not small. Because the love and expectation of the fans of the port city team is very large and the depth of Hai Phong's force is not outstanding. Last season, Hai Phong only finished in 12th place. In particular, coach Pham Anh Tuan almost had to renew the squad before V.League 2020 when many good foreign players such as Diego Fagan and Jeremie Lynch left.
However, the experience of being a “deputy” for 10 years at SLNA and having attended many coaching courses will still be a launching pad for this coach. Leading a V.League team for the first time will certainly have some pressure, but Nghe An fans still expect the ability and dedication of coach Pham Anh Tuan.
