Thanh Chuong farmers use exhaust fumes from motorbikes to catch mice
(Baonghean.vn) - To protect crops, Thanh Luong commune (Thanh Chuong) has mobilized all people to go to the fields to catch mice. The unique feature of these hunting methods is using exhaust fumes from motorbikes to smoke the mice, creating a very fun atmosphere in the fields.
These days, in the early morning and late afternoon, in the fields and Song Lam beach of Thanh Luong commune, Thanh Chuong district, it is easy to hear the sound of motorbikes revving and the shouts of many people catching field mice.
According to Mr. Vo Trong Niem - an official of Thanh Luong Commune People's Committee, one of the active members, in the past, the main activity of catching rats was to find holes and dig, sometimes having to dig up the entire bank to catch them. Now, when finding a rat hole, people only need to use a piece of soft plastic water pipe, insert one end into the hole, the other end into the exhaust pipe of a motorbike and start the engine, revving the engine. The noise of the engine and the gas fumes blowing into the hole make the rats suffocate and crawl out; at this time, some people are waiting to catch them. This method of catching rats is strange and highly effective, so people are very eager to participate and protect the banks of the fields and irrigation canals.

The rat-catching troop also included many students from all levels. Ms. Nguyen Thi Oanh - Head of the Women's Association of Hamlet 3 happily said: "The game of catching rats with motorbike exhaust really excited the children, I just had to follow and collect the rats. It was tiring but very fun."
Thanh Luong is a commune with a large area of Lam River alluvial land, with over 160 hectares, and an ancient tree island located in the center of the alluvial land, so every year after floods, rats from many places drift here, if not caught, the crops will not be protected.

According to Mr. Nguyen Trong Thanh - Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, before planting the spring crop, the Commune People's Committee assigned the Cooperative to organize rat extermination, but due to small-scale catching, the efficiency was not high. This time, the Party Committee - Commune People's Committee mobilized the entire political system to participate and received a very positive response from the people.
In addition to using motorbike exhaust to catch rats collectively, many people also set traps in the middle of the fields and in places where vehicles cannot reach. After 1 week of implementation, Thanh Luong commune people caught over 4,000 rats, both protecting crops and keeping the banks of the fields intact without affecting irrigation works.
