(Baonghean.vn) - Hip replacement surgery is a specialized technique in Orthopedic Trauma to replace a hip joint with damaged articular cartilage or avascular head necrosis with an artificial hip joint; helping patients no longer have to endure pain and quickly return to normal activities and walking...

Hip replacement requires to be performed by experienced specialists, with modern equipment, to ensure that the artificial hip replacement will function normally.

To successfully perform bilateral hip replacement surgery, doctors must consult with multiple specialists, ensuring many factors: anesthesia, resuscitation before, during and after surgery, blood and fluid reserves, and treatment of associated internal diseases. When a patient has bilateral hip osteoarthritis, surgery is usually performed to replace each joint, with the first surgery 3-6 months apart.

Outstanding advantages of bilateral hip replacement surgeryAt the same time, it includes: Only need to go to the operating room once, undergo one surgery, one anesthesia or sedation; Save costs and relieve anxiety when having to go to the hospital for surgery twice; Patients can exercise both legs at the same time, quickly recover the function of both hip joints and return to daily activities soon (do not have to continue to endure prolonged pain of the remaining joint). Using pain relievers after surgery helps patients to exercise early, walk on their own after 2 days, thereby reducing the risk of complications such as venous thrombosis, pressure ulcers, pneumonia, urinary tract infections... shortening the treatment time. Use prophylactic antibiotics once before surgery, no need to use antibiotics after surgery.

Recently, Vinh International Hospital has successfully performed total hip replacement on both sides for many patients.

Mr. NVP, 34 years old in Dien Bich commune, Dien Chau district and Mr. TTH, 44 years old in Vinh Thanh commune, Yen Thanh district, Nghe An came to the clinic with severe pain around the hip joints on both sides (especially the groin area, spreading to the buttocks and down to the knees), making it difficult to walk and change positions.

The doctor took a medical history, examined the hip joint movement, measured the length of both legs, examined the blood vessels and nerves, and performed an X-ray and CT scan on the patient. The patient was diagnosed with bilateral grade III hip osteoarthritis. Conservative treatment was no longer effective, and the patient was indicated for total hip replacement surgery on both sides.

The surgeries took place in 120 minutes and were performed by Dr. Tran Van Thuyen, Head of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. During the surgery, the doctor performed a total hip replacement on both sides using a small incision technique (only 4-5cm), minimally invasive, and minimal soft tissue damage.

On the sixth day after surgery, the patients were discharged from the hospital in the following condition: no fever, stable pulse and blood pressure, dry incisions on both sides, healing, and able to walk normally.

According to BSCKI Tran Van Thuyen:“Osteoarthritis is a common disease that occurs in all ages. Common causes of hip joint diseases are trauma, prolonged use of corticosteroids, alcoholism, smoking... Therefore, to avoid the risk of disease formation, people need to pay attention to their daily lifestyle and diet, lose weight, avoid using stimulants containing alcohol and abusing corticosteroids without examination and prescription from a doctor.”
