The Covid-19 pandemic shows no signs of abating as it continues to infect and claim the lives of thousands of people around the world, especially in Europe.

According to the global statistics site Worldometers.info, as of 7am on April 3, the world had a total of 1,014,386 cases and 52,993 deaths. The number of recovered patients reached 212,018.

Since the outbreak in Wuhan, China in December 2019, the novel coronavirus has spread to 204 countries and territories worldwide. The United States leads the way with 235,747 cases, followed by Italy (115,242 cases), Spain (112,065 cases), Germany (84,284 cases), China (81,589 cases), France (59,105 cases), Iran (50,468 cases) and the United Kingdom (33,718).

Europe continues to be the hardest hit by Covid-19, with more than 500,000 people diagnosed with Covid-19 and 34,571 deaths across the continent. The two hardest hit countries are Italy with nearly 14,000 deaths and Spain with over 10,348 cases.

France also saw a surge in Covid-19 deaths, with the total reaching nearly 5,400 after more than 1,300 more patients died on April 2.

Switzerland reported more than 18,200 positive cases of Covid-19 and more than 430 deaths. The Netherlands followed the trend with the number of infections increasing by 8% to more than 14,600 people and the number of deaths was more than 1,300.

Belgium recorded 183 more Covid-19 deaths, bringing the total to 1,011. With 1,384 new cases, the number of infected people has reached 15,348, with nearly 5,500 cases requiring hospitalization.

Thus, as of April 2, Belgium ranked 6th in Europe in terms of the number of deaths, after Italy, Spain, France, UK and the Netherlands.

According to observers, the actual number could be much higher because many countries are currently only testing cases requiring hospitalization.

The United States remains the country with the highest number of cases in the world. The number of Covid-19 infections in the country increased by 25,500 in just the past 24 hours, bringing the total to more than 240,500, while the death toll exceeded 5,810, an increase of 708 on April 2.

In the "epicenter" of the epidemic, New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo admitted that with the current rate of using ventilators for Covid-19 patients, the state only has enough ventilators for 6 more days. He specifically stated that New York currently has only 2,200 ventilators in reserve and must use ventilators for about 350 new patients every day.

Meanwhile, the US is facing heavy economic damage as a series of businesses have to stop operating due to the pandemic. The Department of Labor announced on April 2 that an additional 6.65 million workers filed for unemployment benefits in the week ending April 28, the highest level in history.

In the "hot spot" of the epidemic, Iran, the country has recorded 50,468 people infected with Covid-19 and 3,160 deaths. In the latest announcement, Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani has just become the highest-ranking official in the Iranian leadership to test positive for the new strain of Corona virus. He is currently quarantined and treated.

In Thailand, Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has imposed a curfew from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. starting April 3. This is the latest measure by the government of this Southeast Asian country in an effort to ban large gatherings and ask people to stay at home as much as possible to repel the epidemic.
