"On the advice of his medical team, the Prime Minister will not be returning to work immediately. He would like to thank everyone at St Thomas' Hospital for the excellent care they have given him," a spokesman for Prime Minister Johnson's Office said.

Johnson's partner, Carrie Symonds, also praised the medical staff for helping him beat the disease. "I can't thank our amazing NHS enough. The doctors and nurses at St Thomas' Hospital have been brilliant. I will never be able to repay you and will never stop thanking you," she tweeted.

Prime Minister Johnson, 55, was taken to St Thomas' Hospital on April 5 with "persistent symptoms" after being infected with Covid-19 for 10 days. A day later, his condition worsened and he was moved to intensive care.

Boris Johnson is the first high-ranking world leader to be admitted to intensive care for Covid-19, as the disease continues to spread around the world. The UK has recorded nearly 80,000 infections and nearly 10,000 deaths from Covid-19.

US experts have warned that Britain will become the worst-hit country in Europe due to Covid-19, possibly accounting for more than 40% of the continent's deaths. They said debates over "herd immunity" in the UK had delayed the introduction of social distancing measures to contain the outbreak.
