(Baonghean.vn) - Although it is just the beginning of the hot season, many locally managed reservoirs in Nghe An have dried up, and the risk of water shortage for the summer-autumn crop is present.

At Kim Vang Lake in Kim Thanh Commune (Yen Thanh), we saw the lake bottom dry up, buffaloes and cows came out to the middle of the lake to eat grass. Mr. Nguyen Tho Son - a farmer in Kim Thanh Commune said: His family has 4 sao of land, but because the reservoir is dry, everything is abandoned.

Mr. Nguyen Van Quan - Chairman of Kim Thanh Commune People's Committee (Yen Thanh) said: Kim Thanh Commune has over 170 hectares of rice, however, 17 large and small reservoirs in the area have all run out of water, so the commune has to convert 50 hectares of rice land to grow crops. Yen Thanh District has over 200 large and small reservoirs, most of which are currently running out of water. This summer-autumn crop, the district has converted 1,000 hectares of rice land in areas lacking dam water to grow crops.

According to the report of the Irrigation Department, Nghe An is the locality with the second largest number of reservoirs in the country, including 625 reservoirs, of which 528 reservoirs are managed by local districts and communes. The water level is currently only 20-30%, especially many reservoirs have run out of water.

Faced with the water shortage for summer-autumn crop production, the Irrigation Department has directed localities to focus on educating people on water conservation. Irrigation units and communes must use irrigation properly, and some areas lacking water must be converted to growing crops.
