Russia's TASS news agency reported on May 29 that in a recent interview, Russian Ambassador to Pyongyang Alexander Matsegora said that thanks to strict blockade measures, North Korea has successfully kept the Covid-19 epidemic caused by the new strain of Corona virus outside its territory. This makes North Korea almost the only country in the world to avoid the pandemic.

“We can say that North Korea is almost the only country in the world that has so far avoided the pandemic, and while the borders are closed, there is no risk of the disease entering the country. This is an achievement and a big positive signal,” the Russian ambassador noted.

At the same time, the Russian diplomat stressed, “associated with this reality is a huge challenge that this country will have to face in the future.”

“It is now clear that the coronavirus is not going away anywhere, we will all have to learn to live with it,” he explained. “Scientists claim that humanity is gaining immunity by overcoming the current challenges of disease, hospitalization, suffering and death. If that is true, North Korea may be the only country in the world that has not achieved herd immunity to the disease, trying to carry out the complex task of keeping the virus out of their homeland.”

According to the ambassador, “sooner or later, the reopening of borders, the resumption of delegation exchanges, business trips, tourism, study abroad… will increase, and North Koreans who could not return home before the flights were canceled will return home.”

He asked what would happen in such a situation: “Maintaining self-isolation for an indefinite period of time, waiting for a vaccine to be available to vaccinate the population on a national scale? Finally opening the borders after carefully studying the experience of other countries, stockpiling medicines, preparing hospital beds and being ready to follow the same path as our neighbors?” The Russian diplomat concluded: “I really hope that our North Korean friends will find an appropriate response to this difficult question.”
