The story of businesses promoting cashless: Easy but not easy

(Baonghean.vn) - Vietjet Deputy General Director Nguyen Thi Thuy Binh recently had a discussion session with leaders of HDBank, Grab, Momo, VISA... at a workshop within the framework of the Cashless Day 2020 program to promote cashless payment solutions.

Summarizing 5 years of implementing the cashless payment project, Director of the State Bank's Payment Department Pham Tien Dung said: Vietnam has recorded particularly remarkable results in just 5 years of implementing the project, bringing about strong changes in society.

Outstanding results in payment activities are reflected in the legal framework and policies in payment activities that continue to be improved, creating favorable conditions for the application of new and modern technologies; Interbank electronic payment infrastructure, switching and clearing systems continue to be upgraded and improved; The electronic payment ecosystem has also been completed and the connection and integration with other industries and fields allow customers to make online payment transactions for electricity, water, telecommunications bills, online shopping at e-commerce sites, electronic tax payment and some fees and charges when performing some public administrative services...

In particular, most of the achievements of the 4.0 technology revolution have been strongly applied in the payment field. The issue of security and safety in payment is always of concern, customers are given priority in the process of providing products and services, ensuring legal rights.

The workshop also listened to practical experiences and shared experiences of businesses in changing cash usage habits of people and the whole society in recent times.

Representative of Electricity Group, Mr. Vo Quang Lam - Deputy General Director said that from 2005 to 2019, Electricity Group has implemented many measures to eliminate blank areas of cashless payments such as digital transformation since 2005. By 2019, 63.91% of bills and 81.27% of electricity bills were paid through banks or credit institutions, of which 54.64% of bills and 72.32% of electricity bills were paid through non-cash methods.

HDBank Deputy General Director Le Thanh Trung said that HDBank identifies digital transformation strategy as a consistent strategy throughout the development process, therefore all of HDBank's strategies and services are geared towards digital transformation to bring customers convenience, the most beneficial feeling and especially safety.

From the business side, the representative of the new-generation airline Vietjet, Vietjet Deputy General Director Nguyen Thi Thuy Binh said that Vietjet not only changes people's awareness and habits of air travel but also changes customers' consumption behavior, striving to act as a "catalyst for market change". Before Vietjet entered the market, the rate of online air ticket purchases in Vietnam was only under 8%, and online payments were much lower. Now this number has changed a lot, 99% of Vietjet's current revenues are not related to cash. In 2019, the total non-cash revenue of the entire Vietjet system reached 2.5 billion USD, an increase of 25% compared to 2018.

Accordingly, Vietjet continuously develops payment utilities for customers through: credit cards such as Visa, Master, JCB, Amex, domestic debit cards, E-banking connecting with more than 40 banks in Vietnam and abroad, QR Pay, cooperation with domestic wallets, new payment method is online installment payment launched right on Cashless Day 2019.

"Not only developing diverse payment utilities for customers on online ticket sales channels, attractive and regular promotional programs have attracted and created online shopping and payment habits of customers. Surely many of us know the program "12 o'clock, Vietjet only". Customers who visit Vietjet's website to buy tickets and pay online immediately will be able to hunt for many promotional tickets. This program has created a new habit for the office community of "hunting for tickets at lunch" with cards and online payment accounts. Or recently, the program of 2.5 million promotional tickets from 8,000 VND for 8 newly opened domestic routes of Vietjet also only applies to tickets paid online"

“If the cashless payment market is a cake, Vietjet is the dough to make this cake bigger,” said Ms. Thuy Binh. Diverse services, convenient online ticket purchasing and payment methods will further stimulate the market’s smart consumption habits.

According to Vietjet leaders, after the Covid-19 pandemic, the trend of living and consuming online has become more popular. Leading this trend, Vietjet is urgently completing a new version of its online sales channel with convenient online payment utilities and bringing the most benefits to customers. Vietjet is also developing a "super app" to not only sell airline tickets but also allow customers to shop for many other products and services such as hotels, car rentals, financial loans, etc.

In response to this year's Cashless Day, Vietjet also has a promotion program of up to 36% cashback for customers who buy tickets on June 16 on the Vietjet Air website or mobile app.

In the past three days 9, 10, 11, responding to Cashless Day and the program to promote Vietnam tourism, Vietjet also launched 2.5 million tickets priced at 8,000 VND for customers who buy tickets on the website/mobile and pay online, for all flight networks and especially flights on 8 new domestic routes. Vietjet's largest domestic flight network in Vietnam with 53 routes will create many travel options for customers.

Concluding the workshop, Deputy Governor of the State Bank Nguyen Kim Anh highly appreciated the efforts of management agencies, ministries, branches, localities and enterprises in promoting non-cash payments and the results achieved in the past time. Promoting non-cash payments is an inevitable result in the context of the 4.0 industrial revolution and believes that with the determined efforts and consensus of all relevant parties, in the coming time, non-cash payment figures will achieve even more impressive growth.
