US Secretary of State issues statement celebrating 25 years of relations with Vietnam

On July 10, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a press statement commemorating the 25th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations with Vietnam.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's statement said July 11 marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the United States and Vietnam.

Over the past 25 years, the two countries have built a partnership and friendship based on common interests, mutual respect and people-to-people ties.

Daily interactions between the two countries are reflected in increasingly strengthened ties in trade and investment, strategic cooperation, and coordination on humanitarian and war legacy issues, including the search for US servicemen missing in action.

Secretary Pompeo emphasized that over the years, the two countries have strengthened and expanded their comprehensive partnership based on a shared vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific region and respect for each other's independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political systems.

The US highly appreciates Vietnam's role as ASEAN Chair this year, especially in coordinating ASEAN's response to the Covid-19 pandemic as well as issues related to economic recovery.

People-to-people ties between the United States and Vietnam continue to grow. The engagement of the Vietnamese American community has made America strong and prosperous. The United States values ​​the cultural interweaving of the nearly 30,000 Vietnamese students studying in the United States and the more than 1,200 American students studying in Vietnam each year.

The United States is looking forward to the graduation of the first class of Fulbright University Vietnam in 2023. The United States also hopes to soon reach an agreement to bring Peace Corps volunteers to Vietnam for the first time, strengthening the strong people-to-people ties between the two countries.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the Vietnamese people have welcomed President Donald Trump to Hanoi twice and expressed confidence that President Trump and the American people will cooperate with US partners and allies to bring about a new era in the Indo-Pacific region.
