New law
President Vladimir Putin signed this federal law in April 2020.
Previously, the law required those wishing to obtain Russian citizenship to submit an application to the competent authority of the foreign country declaring their renunciation of their current citizenship.
Fundamental change
The new law excludes this requirement when applying for citizenship, as well as the requirement for a three-year residency in Russia and confirmation of a legitimate source of livelihood for stateless adults who hold former Soviet citizenship, live in former Soviet republics, but have not obtained citizenship in those countries...
The same rules apply to foreigners married to Russians living in the country and having children together, as well as to those whose biological parents are Russian citizens and live in Russia.
In addition, the required period of employment in the Russian Federation for graduates from Russian universities has been reduced from three years to one year.
