Although it is raining heavily, in the vegetable growing area of Quynh Minh commune (Quynh Luu), people still gather in the fields to harvest vegetables before storm No. 2 makes landfall.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Linh, a vegetable grower, said that the price of green onions is high at this time, so people are trying to harvest and sell them before the storm hits and floods.

In Quynh Luong commune, people still go to the fields to harvest vegetables during the storm. Mr. Pham Van Hung in hamlet 3 said that the storm will make landfall early this afternoon, at that time it will rain heavily and strong winds can knock down vegetables and cause deep flooding. Therefore, this morning, his family mobilized workers to go to the fields to harvest more than 1 sao of green onions.

“We have to harvest scallions early to avoid the storm. Due to the continuous rain from yesterday until now, traders are buying onions at 7,000 VND/kg (down 2,000 VND/kg compared to the previous day). If we don’t act quickly, tomorrow the rain will cause flooding and the price will be even lower,” said Mr. Hung.

The vegetable-growing communes of Quynh Minh, Quynh Luong, and Quynh Bang (Quynh Luu) have 700 hectares of vegetable production. Currently, in the fields, green onions account for 60-70% of the vegetable area, of which about 40% is in the harvest period. According to households, due to the high price of green onions, 1 sao after harvest brings an income of about 15 million VND.

In the vegetable fields in Quynh Lien commune (Hoang Mai town), people are urgently harvesting vegetables such as green onions, mustard greens, squash, tomatoes...

Mr. Nguyen Van Hung in Dien Thanh commune said: "My family has 3 sao of vegetables, although it is not time to harvest yet, however, knowing that the storm will make landfall this afternoon, this morning I mobilized my family to gather to harvest early, to avoid the storm causing flooding and damage...".

Ms. Ho Thi Tam - Chairman of Dien Thanh Commune People's Committee said: "The whole commune has about 100 hectares of various vegetables. Up to now, in areas where seeds are being sown, the locality has directed people to cover the vegetable seed beds to limit strong winds when the storm hits."

Dien Chau district currently has nearly 1,000 hectares of various vegetables, of which more than 400 hectares of melons have been basically harvested. The remaining vegetables such as various green vegetables, squash, beans, etc. are being quickly harvested by local authorities before the storm hits.

In addition to focusing on educating people to go to the fields to harvest vegetables to avoid storms, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of localities requires vegetable growing areas to focus on dredging canals in the fields to avoid flooding when heavy rains last for a long time./.
