According to the report of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, in 2019, Nghe An had 118,434 meat goats, 47,514 breeding goats and 59,537 kids, mainly concentrated in lowland areas and basically local grass goat breeds.

Goat farming in Nghe An is mainly done by household farming; farm farming only accounts for about 1.5-2% of the total herd.

According to the general assessment, Nghe An has many favorable conditions for developing goat farming, with a mountainous area of over 1.3 million hectares and unused land of over 53,000 hectares. Meanwhile, goat farming requires a small investment capital but has a quick turnover, high profits, low risk of disease, and high demand for products. These are considered advantages that need to be well utilized, especially when diseases have been, are and will continue to develop complicatedly in livestock and poultry.

The agency drafting the project, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, is required to receive comments to continue perfecting the project; clearly identify the necessity of developing the project; review the suitability of some indicators; supplement mechanisms and policies; and make specific zoning to have appropriate development directions.
